Tree-Climbing Lions, Pink Flamingos & Lush Groundwater Forests

Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's most diverse and underrated parks. Squeezed between the Rift Valley escarpment and the soda lake, it packs an extraordinary variety of habitats into a compact area — groundwater forest, bushy woodland, open floodplain, and the shimmering alkaline lake itself.

The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions (a behaviour rarely seen elsewhere), vast flocks of flamingos that turn the lake shore pink, and rich birdlife with over 400 species recorded. Hippos wallow in the pools, elephants wander the forests, and buffaloes graze the floodplains. Lake Manyara makes a superb first day's safari before heading to Tarangire or Ngorongoro.
